Sushruta is the father of surgery in Ayurveda as well as Allopathic Surgery. He was the first surgeon to develop cosmetic surgery in ayurveda. The karna sandhana (building earlobe) ,nasa sandhan (building nose) and oshta sandhan (correcting lips) are the first examples of plastic surgery. His surgical treatment for trichiasis can be reckoned with some of the modern operative techniques used for eye this disease. It is because of this contribution that Sushruta is called as father of surgery.
In sushrut samhita all the focus is upon the surgical procedures. The majority of instruments that are used till date are somewhat modified form of the yantra (blunt instrument) and shastra (sharp instrument).
The surgical practice is mostly same both in Ayurveda & in modern system of medicine. In sushruta samhita all the focus is upon the surgical procedures. It has got all the necessary details about instrument, surgical procedure, pre-operative, and post-operative measures. Though more than 100 blunt instruments & many sharp instruments have been described in Ayurveda, now a days the modified form of these instruments are used to practice surgery.
Today, to practice surgery, advanced life support systems, anesthetic & analgesic drugs are essential but Sushrutha has described the use of medicated decoction to heal up the wounds as well as prevent them from infection is the basic ideology of anti septic and anti biotic type of herbs in Ayurveda. Modern Ayurvedic surgeons use these Ayurvedic drugs & therapies during the pre-oprative & post-operative periods for better care of the patient.
Ayurvedic surgery doesn't mean Instrumental operations only. There are some other methods like Kshara karma [Chemical cauterization], Agni karma [Thermal cauterization] & Rakta mokshana [Blood letting]
Though the modern surgery is derived from Ayurveda, we can not satisfy with the state of modern Ayurvedic Surgery presently. So every Ayurvedic surgeon is responsible to continue the great work of Sushrutha & serve the world with their skills in Ayurvedic Surgery.
